Key Details:

One of our best clients is looking to hire 500+ remote employees this year, so we decided to create a page detailing these positions. A few key details on the firm:

  • Ideal candidates have current/past Big 4 accounting firm experience or come from large professional consulting firms.
  • Lucrative compensation model that includes a base salary and substantial bonus program. Equity awarded at Manager and Sr Manager levels.
  • After five years of working at this firm the average team member’s salary increased twofold whereas industry equivalent salaries increased by only 50%.
  • The company is backed by a top-five global private equity firm and has experienced significant growth over the past few years.

Compensation
Structure

Compensation package includes a competitive base salary plus overtime bonuses for every hour worked over 40 hrs each week. This represents a significant raise as most big four bonuses are minimal.

Example:

For this example, we’ll consider a senior level candidate (3-5 years of experience) making a base salary of $95k in both firms – equivalent to around $45.67 per hour. Comparison will be for one big 4 busy season week, 60 hours.

Big 4 CPA Firm Senior:

60 hours worked, paid for standard 40 hours. Total comp for the week is $1,826.80 – essentially $30.45 per hour worked.

Advisory Consultant:

60 hours worked, paid for 60 hours. Total comp for the week is $2,740.20 – maintaining an hourly base salary equivalent of $45.67.

You’ll most likely work fewer hours in an advisory capacity as there isn’t a defined busy season, but the comparison is interesting. Time is a valuable commodity and many don’t consider compensation related to hours of their life spent working.

Why consider advisory roles vs staying in Big 4?
  • Better work-life balance. OT bonuses (semi-annual) are calculated off billable hours over 40 each week.
  • Progression based on merit, not set amount of time.
  • Broad, agnostic client base – you will get exposure to multiple clients in different industries.
  • Diversified work – Transactional, operational, and technical.
  • You control your overall total compensation; the more you want to work, the more you can earn in bonuses.
  • Shorter projects. Typically, 1-5 months in duration.

Why consider advisory roles vs corporate positions?
  • Always learning something new as each client presents an opportunity to learn new industries, skills, and accomplishments.
  • Some people get bored in corporate roles as they can be static and repetitive.
  • Suppose you’re not sure which path to take (staying in Big 4 vs leaving for corporate). In that case, advisory positions can give you hands-on experience in a variety of different roles, helping you discover your true passion.

Other Benefits to Consider
  • Work on different consulting projects all the time – a great way to diversify experience.
  • Progression based on merit, not set amount of time.
  • Gain exposure to different industries.
  • Be a project-based advisor.
  • You actually do the work vs just reviewing it, so you get experience in theory and operationally.
  • In 24-36 months, what you see here is what others will see in their career (not pigeonholed or siloed).
  • Work/Life balance, not working 65-70 hours per week.
